People often assume that the appearance of a “double chin” is caused by weight gain. It may be surprising to know that even physically fit and healthy people can suffer from submental fat (layer of excess fat in the upper neck) or lax skin. An individual’s age, diet, genetics, weight, and posture can all affect the development of a double chin. Fortunately, Dr. Jodie Reinertson offers non-invasive options for your needs and aesthetic goals. Qualified candidates may be recommended KYBELLA® or CoolSculpting® if their double chin has resulted from submental fullness.

KYBELLA® injections are a popular non-surgical way to get rid of a double chin. The injectable solution targets the fatty tissue in the neck region and breaks it down. For this reason, patients who have a double chin caused by lax skin may not be recommended KYBELLA® since it is not designed to address loose or excess skin. Patients who do undergo this treatment for targeting excess fat generally appreciate how convenient and effective the process is. Dr. Reinertson will discuss how many injectable sessions you may need during the initial consultation. Injectable sessions can be relatively quick and usually last 15 to 20 minutes. KYBELLA® can offer long-lasting results that may even become permanent for some individuals.

Another fat reduction treatment that does not require surgery is CoolSculpting®. Similar to KYBELLA®, the procedure can target the excess fat cells beneath the chin for a more contoured neck profile. CoolSculpting® technology is unique because it delivers cooling energy to the desired area and freezes the fat cells to naturally break them down. Patients may need as little as one or two CoolSculpting® sessions to achieve their desired results. Each session is about 35 to 60 minutes, and the procedure requires little to no downtime, so patients may return to their daily routine immediately after. The destroyed fat cells naturally get processed out of the body in the span of four to six months. However, patients may begin seeing the effects of the treatment as early as three weeks. Results can typically be enjoyed long-term if patients maintain a healthy lifestyle. For optimal contouring results, good candidates may come back to the office for follow-up sessions with Dr. Reinertson.
