Home/Blog / How Can Fat Be Removed By Freezing It?

With innovative body contouring treatments like CoolSculpting®, stubborn fat that has not responded to diet and exercise can effectively be reduced. This is possible through a process known as cryolipolysis. In the CoolSculpting procedure, controlled cooling is delivered to the body area being treated—such as the love handles, abdomen, hips, or arms. As this tissue is cooled down, the fat cells begin to crystalize as the surrounding skin and other tissues remain unaffected. This is possible because fat freezes at a warmer temperature than skin does, allowing CoolSculpting technology to selectively damage the fat cells without harming other tissues.

Once the fat cells are crystalized, they are damaged and begin to break down. Results from CoolSculpting are not immediate, because the damaged fat cells must gradually be metabolized by the body. Over the course of four to six months, the targeted cells are removed from the body via natural processes. Cryolipolysis makes it possible to literally “freeze” fat to produce a more contoured physique.
