What is Radiesse dermal filler?
Unlike hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, RADIESSE® dermal filler is made of Calcium Hydroxyapatite, which are small, smooth calcium spheres suspended in a water-based gel. Just like hyaluronic dermal fillers, RADIESSE® is bio-compatible and FDA-approved, and does not require allergy testing. It immediately adds volume and additionally encourages the growth of your own collagen and provides long-lasting results. It is the preferred dermal filler of Dr. Reinertson at CosMedic Skincare.
What is RADIESSE® dermal filler used for?
It is used for treating deep facial folds and wrinkles around the nose, mouth and temples and it great for adding volume to the region surrounding the cheeks. It can also be beneficial for filling certain types of scars. It is also the natural choice for treating thinning and aged hands as the results are long lasting and immediately noticeable after treatment. RADIESSE® dermal filler is not suitable for lip pumping procedures.
How long does the treatment take?
Typical treatments last approximately 30 minutes. For your comfort, we can also provide topical numbing cream to help reduce the discomfort of the injection. Please add 15 minutes to your appointment time if you would like to have topical numbing as part of your treatment. We offer this additional service free of charge as a courtesy to our patients.
What results can I expect?
A unique quality of RADIESSE® is that the results are immediate. In addition to providing volume upon the completion of the treatment, the unique calcium microspheres begin to encourage the growth of collagen in the treated areas. Slowly the microspheres will be reabsorbed by your body and your own collagen will remain in its place. Results may last for 1 year and in some patients, results last up to 15 months.
What does RADIESSE® dermal filler literally do?
Upon injection, the smooth calcium microspheres add volume. They correct the deep folds and facial wrinkles caused by collagen loss that is natural with aging. The microspheres act as “pillars” to fill the space that was once occupied by naturally occurring collagen. Once injected, RADIESSE® begins to encourage your body to produce new collagen, which will replace the RADIESSE® as it begins to be broken down by your body. The photo on the left shows the presence of RADIESSE® once injected. The picture on the right illustrates how collagen begins to form around the spheres creating the structure to correct deep folds and wrinkles. Collagen growth and replacement will take place in approximately 3 months from the initial treatment.
3 Months Post-Injection
Is the injection painful?
Dr. Reinertson mixes a small amount of numbing Lidocaine with the RADIESSE® before injecting. Using ice packs and a skilled hand she is able to make the RADIESSE® treatment very comfortable for her patients. Most patients feel a slight pinching or mild ache immediately post injection that usually goes away within a few minutes. Mild swelling and/or bruising are the most common side effects. If you are allergic to or sensitive to Lidocaine or Xylocaine, please inform our medical staff or Dr. Reinertson prior to your procedure. Your comfort and safety are our primary concern.
What are the common side effects of treatment?
People react to the injection process differently. Common side effects are tenderness, bruising, bumps/lumps and swelling at the site of injection and typically last 2-7 days. Some patients experience very little bruising or swelling and are back to their normal activities immediately. Please note that side effects can last up to 2 weeks for some patients. This is a normal part of the healing process and will subside as your body acclimates to the injection.
What can I do to reduce the side effects of treatment?
By discontinuing the use of blood thinners such as aspirin, fish oil, and ibuprofen a week prior to your appointment, the likelihood and duration of side effects significantly reduces. Arnica Montana, taken sublingually, will also assist in reducing the likelihood and longevity of bruising and swelling. We do not recommend you discontinue blood thinners if you are taking them by prescription or under the advice of a physician.
